Your source for
Domain Names, Hosting, SSL Certificates, Search Engine Visibility,
and Web Based E-mail
So you have an idea for a website and
don't know where to begin.
This page is an effort to help get
you started.
1) Put your ideas to paper. Content is
King. Generate as much content as you can.
2) Get your artwork together. Be
careful with copyright issues.
3) Check and see if the domain name you wish to
use is available. You can do that with just about any web
hosting company. You can
click here for our search or try
JustHost.com.
While you are there purchase your hosting services
as well.
There is a process known as propigation where a
domain name/server is made available to the entire internet.
This process usually occurs within 24 hours but it can take as long as 5
days. Propigation has to take place before anyone can view
your site. So go ahead and set up your domain name and hosting
services and let the propigation take place while you design your
site.
4) Design your site. You can use free
resources or purchase design software.
Page Breeze is a free HTML
editor. You can
download it
here. Windows Expression Studio is
a solution that you can purchase from the
Microsoft Store. Just search the term "expression" in the
search bar.
You may want to consider using a Content
Management System such as
Joomla.
You can get templates from
Joomla-monster.com
An example of a Joomla site is
Benson NC Now.
Benson NC Now is a local online news site.
JustHost and our platform alow for automatic
installation of Joomla.
5) Now that you have designed your site you
need to transfer your files from your computer to the hosting
server.
If you purchased Windows Expression Studio or any
other "paid" software you can use their publishing section to
publish to the server.
If you went the free route you need to use a ftp
client to transfer your files. There is a free solution for
this and you may want to use it even if you purchased software.
It usually works much quicker. FileZilla is a free ftp client.
You can
download FileZilla here.
6) Your site is now available for the world
to see and enjoy. Check it out and see what you have just made
available to the world.
7) Don't forget to let your friends know
what you have done. Send links to them via all the social
media that you use such as
facebook and
twitter.
If you want you can also use
Constant Contact to send out an e-mail campaign to let everyone
know.
This is just a simple explanation to creating a
web site. There is a lot more information on this subject both
in books and available over the internet.
Hope you have fun creating your web site.
